I'm not seeing any effect on the decay rate of americium from solar activity, so I'm ending that experiment. I've been told that an alpha emitter like americium is the wrong isotope to use, anyway. Carbon-14 looks to be an obvious choice, but the source is fairly expensive and the ion chamber would need to be rebuilt to accommodate pressurization, since beta particles have a lot more penetrating power. Realistically, it probably isn't going to happen!
